Baseball Recap: Merritt Island Drops Highest Score of Season Against Cocoa

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Merritt Island). Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Cocoa Tigers a 22-0 shutout on Friday. Considering the Mustangs have won seven games by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Jayce Brandes made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Brandes was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, Asher Anderson was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February. Jacob Acker was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Merritt Island was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .550. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive contests.

Merritt Island is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Cocoa, they are on a 27-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-13.

Merritt Island didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 5-4 loss against Satellite on the 1st. As for Cocoa, they have also already played their next contest, a 14-4 defeat against Brevard HEAT on the 1st.
