Baseball Game Preview: Safford Bulldogs vs. Sabino Sabercats

Safford hasn't had much luck against Sabino recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. Safford will head out to take on Sabino at 5:00 p.m. Safford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.

Safford took a loss when they played away from home on Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They came out on top against Rincon/University by a score of 9-5. The victory was some much needed relief for the Bulldogs as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Carlos Arbizo made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over 5.2 innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Safford's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 5-1 (and 0-3 when he doesn't).

Arbizo wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Cole Goodman, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs Goodman has posted since back in March of 2024.

Safford hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rincon/University struck out 12 times.

Meanwhile, Sabino was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a 6-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Benjamin Franklin.

Safford now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Sabino, their loss dropped their record down to 0-10.

Everything went Safford's way against Sabino when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Safford made off with a 10-4 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Safford since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
