Baseball Recap: John Glenn Takes a Loss

John Glenn had lost 11 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 2-9 to make it 12. They fell just short of the Pierson Whalers by a score of 8-6. The Knights were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Whalers earlier this season, when they won 7-2.

John Glenn saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hunter Klinger-Cooley, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another was Kieran Kenny, who went 3-for-4 with one run.

As for Pierson, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-6. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

On Pierson's side, Spencer Cavaniola made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Cavaniola has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andy Wayne, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Max Krotman, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John Glenn will square off against Bayport-Blue Point at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Phantoms' pitching crew has only allowed 0.2 runs per game this season, so the Knights' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Pierson, they will take on Port Jefferson at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
