Basketball Recap: Topsail Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Elijah Hebron and Rhett Britt

Topsail lost against Laney last Wednesday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Topsail Pirates lost 67-46 to the Laney Buccaneers. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 279th, while the Buccaneers are ranked 80th).

Topsail's loss came despite strong showings from Rhett Britt and Elijah Hebron. Britt went 7-for-12 en route to 21 points, while Hebron posted 13 points. What's more, Britt also posted a 57% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Duron Vaughn, who earned four points in addition to four steals and three blocks.

Laney's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Colin Lamb led the charge by going 6-for-12 to rack up 13 points. Lamb is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last five games he's played. Dylan Fortun was another key player, going 6-for-9 on his way to 17 points.

Topsail's loss dropped their record down to 10-14. As for Laney, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season.

Coming up, Topsail will head out to challenge Hoggard at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Hoggard is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 66.8 points per game this season. As for Laney, they will be playing at home against North Brunswick at 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Laney is facing North Brunswick at the right time seeing as North Brunswick is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
