Baseball Recap: Academy of Richmond County Drops Season-High Score on Hephzibah

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Academy of Richmond County). They were the clear victors by a 20-1 margin over the Hephzibah Rebels on Monday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Connor Shouse was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Academy of Richmond County is 4-2 when Shouse allows two or fewer earned runs, but 3-10 otherwise. Shouse was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Henry Oliver and Sam Barfield did most of the damage at the plate: Oliver scored four runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-3, while Barfield scored two runs and stole three bases while going 4-for-4. Those four stolen bases gave Oliver a new career-high. Ben Wright was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.

Academy of Richmond County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.

Academy of Richmond County's win bumped their record up to 7-12. As for Hephzibah, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season.

Academy of Richmond County will welcome Cross Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Musketeers are facing the Razorbacks at the right time seeing as the Razorbacks are stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Hephzibah, they are taking a road trip to take on Harlem at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will roll in looking for their 27th straight victory, something the Rebels surely won't give up without a fight.
