Baseball Game Preview: Irvington Vikings vs. Newark Memorial Cougars

The Irvington Vikings will face off against the Newark Memorial Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Irvington is coming into the matchup on a six-game losing streak.

Irvington had taken Washington down for two straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Friday. The Vikings fell 7-2 to the Huskies.

Meanwhile, Newark Memorial never let their opponents score on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over Kennedy. The Cougars have beaten the Titans the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Titans has come to flipping the script.

Noah Hanohano was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Julian Munoz and Julian Ibarra did most of the damage at the plate: Munoz went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one run, and one double, while Ibarra went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits Ibarra has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Andres Romo, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Newark Memorial always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kennedy only posted an OBP of .222.

Newark Memorial's win bumped their record up to 16-5. As for Irvington, their loss dropped their record down to 7-15.

Irvington came out on top in a nail-biter against Newark Memorial in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 2-0. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
