Baseball Recap: Derby Panthers vs. Maize Eagles
Derby extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 4-15 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Maize Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-1 on Tuesday.
Jack Trainer made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI. Talon Cunningham also deserves some recognition as he got his first hits of the season.
As for Maize, they have been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games.
On Maize's side, Quincy Kohen tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. Kohen has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Parker Meirowsky, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted over his last 12 matches. Another player making a difference was Gavin Short, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Derby will face off against rival Hutchinson on Friday. Meanwhile, Maize is set to square off against their familiar foe Haysville Campus at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 2.9, the Colts 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
