Baseball Recap: Matanzas Comes Up Short

Matanzas had lost 14 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 2-12 to make it 15. They lost 12-2 to the Father Lopez Green Wave. If the Pirates were looking for revenge after losing 14-3 to the Green Wave when the teams met back in April of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Matanzas saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Paul Trettner, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

As for Father Lopez, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 5-12 record. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Father Lopez's side, Ian Campanella spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Westen Brownlee, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaine Peterson, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Matanzas will square off against Palatka at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Pirates' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 8.1 runs per game this season. As for Father Lopez, they will be playing at home against Trinity Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Saints have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.91 runs per game on average), something the Green Wave will no doubt try to take advantage of.
