Baseball Recap: Cranberry Area Comes Up Short

Cranberry Area had lost four straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 6-11 to make it five. They lost 11-1 to the Wilmington Greyhounds. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Berries have suffered since March 29th.

Cranberry Area saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Blake Marchinke, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

As for Wilmington, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-9. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games.

On Wilmington's side, Tristen Jones tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. The Greyhounds are 5-1 when Jones allows one or fewer earned runs, but 6-8 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Chase Mitcheltree was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Wilmington's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-9 when he doesn't). Kayden Wygant was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Cranberry Area will face off against North Clarion at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Berries are facing the Wolves at the right time seeing as the Wolves are stuck on a 14-game losing streak. Wilmington does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
