Basketball Recap: McCutcheon Comes Up Short

After flying high against Seeger last Saturday, McCutcheon came back down to earth. The McCutcheon Mavericks lost 68-46 to the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 89th, while the Bronchos are ranked 28th).

When it comes to explaining why McCutcheon lost, don't look at Brody Baker. Despite the final result, he posted 16 points. Baker has been hot, having posted 16 or more points the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Owen Souligne, who put up nine points.

Alonzo Clawson-Smith was his usual excellent self, going 10 for 16 on his way to 23 points along with five rebounds and three steals for Lafayette Jefferson. That makes it three consecutive games in which Clawson-Smith has scored at least a third of Lafayette Jefferson's points. Devion Penny was another key player, putting up 14 points and six boards.

McCutcheon's loss dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Lafayette Jefferson, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 15-3.

Looking ahead, McCutcheon will square off against Crawfordsville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. McCutcheon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.9 points per game this season. As for Lafayette Jefferson, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 53-35 win against West Lafayette on the 8th.
