Baseball Recap: Vanlue Comes Up Short

Vanlue extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 31 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-20 in the process. They came up short against the Cardinal Stritch Cardinals, falling 10-2. The Wildcats were not able to make up for their defeat to the Cardinals from their previous meeting back in April of 2023.

Vanlue saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Toby Reed, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.

As for Cardinal Stritch, their win ended a seven-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-14. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for they considering their one-run performance the game before.

On Cardinal Stritch's side, Angelo Nino made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Nino has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.

In other batting news, Shawn Weatherford was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Cardinal Stritch's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-13 when he doesn't). Simon Ross was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Vanlue will face off against Cory-Rawson at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats are facing the Fighting Hornets at the right time seeing as the Fighting Hornets are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Cardinal Stritch, they will take on Central Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Cardinals will also cruise into their next matchup with the timing on their side: the Fighting Irish will have lost three straight heading into Saturday's contest.
