Recap: Donna North Chiefs vs. Mercedes Tigers
If the Donna North Chiefs were feeling good off their 46-24 takedown of the Porter Cowboys last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Donna North was outmatched by Mercedes on the road and fell 62-23. While losing is never fun, Donna North can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1509th, while Mercedes is ranked 538th).
Donna North's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Jackie Rincon, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds and five steals, and Jennifer Rincon who scored five points along with seven rebounds. Rincon is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least three every time she's taken the court this season.
Jaymie Flores was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with seven steals for Mercedes. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Flores has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Leah Adame, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds.
Donna North's defeat was their 18th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-30. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 19.3 points per game. As for Mercedes, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 22-10 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Donna North will take on Lopez at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mercedes, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Pace at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Pace focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Friday.
