Basketball Recap: Wren Falls Despite Big Games from Hailey Burgess and Ava O'shields

After a string of four wins, Wren's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 62-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lewis County Minutemen.

Wren's loss came despite strong showings from Ava O'Shields and Hailey Burgess. O'Shields dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten boards, while Burgess dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. O'Shields' afternoon made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Reese Pennington, who posted four points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Wren smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

Lewis County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Payten Goodwin out in front who put up 18 points in addition to four steals and three blocks. The dominant performance gave Goodwin a new career-high in blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Pinkney, who had 16 points along with five boards and three steals.

Wren's defeat dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Lewis County, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-2.

Wren didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 42-29 loss against Rowan County on the 28th. As for Lewis County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 59-16 victory against Cane Bay on the 28th.
