Football Recap: Sedgwick County Gets the Win

Sedgwick County proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 22) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 24-23 win over the Simla Cubs. This was payback for the Cougars, who suffered a 30-20 loss the last time these two teams met.

It was another big night for Owen Harris, who rushed for 276 yards. Those 276 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Another rusher making a difference was Brady Mollendor, who rushed for 123 yards and a pair of scores on only 15 carries.

Sedgwick County's run defense was locked in: Simla could only muster 3.3 yards per carry. While two picked up at least eight total tackles, Harris stood above the rest. He rushed for 276 yards. That's the most yards per carry they've managed all season.

Simla's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Evan Guy, who threw for 221 yards and two TDs, and also rushed for 43 yards. The Cubs' leading receiver Tatum Kocerha was Guy's top target yet again, picking up 151 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The victory (which was Sedgwick County's third in a row) raised their record to 3-1. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.7 points over those games. As for Simla, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Sedgwick County and Simla will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Cougars will face off against rival Dayspring Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Simla is set to take on their familiar foe Calhan at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
