Basketball Recap: Southwind Takes a Loss

After flying high against Cordova last Friday, Southwind came back down to earth. The Southwind Jaguars took a 62-46 bruising from the Houston Mustangs on Tuesday. The Jaguars were probably out for revenge after losing 62-33 to them when the teams met back in February of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Defeat or not, Southwind got some senior leadership from Camille Sanders and Karlisa Mungen. Sanders dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten boards, while Mungen went 6 for 14 en route to 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals. That was a full 34.8% of Southwind's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ari'Elle Stinson, who earned six points.

Even though they lost, Southwind smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Houston's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Caidyn Sanders, who went 9 of 16 on her way to 20 points in addition to eight assists and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Laila Mcnamee, who went 5 for 10 en route to 17 points along with seven boards and five steals.

Southwind has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season. As for Houston, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Southwind Jaguars challenge the Bartlett Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Bartlett has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 189 points over their last three contests. As for Houston, they are taking a road trip to face off against Germantown at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Houston is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.7 points per game this season.
