Basketball Recap: Monroe Area Takes a Loss

Monroe Area fought the good fight in their overtime match against Oconee County on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Oconee County Warriors by a score of 55-53. The Purple Hurricanes were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Warriors apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Oconee County was led to victory by Mason Hall and Davis Bright. Hall went 7 for 11 en route to 17 points and six rebounds, while Bright went 5 of 8 on his way to 14 points. Those 14 points gave Bright a new career-high. Josiah Gay also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Monroe Area has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for Oconee County, their record is now 8-11.

Monroe Area has already played their next game, a 53-31 defeat against Bleckley County on the 20th. As for Oconee County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 55-28 loss against Madison County on the 18th.
