Basketball Recap: Hebron Comes Up Short

Hebron managed to keep up with Portage until halftime on Tuesday, but things quickly went downhill from there. The Hebron Hawks took a blow against the Portage Indians, falling 81-49. While losing is never fun, the Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 287th, while the Indians are ranked 40th).

Several Hawks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Spencer Wynsma, who posted 17 points. The match was Wynsma's 12th in a row with at least 15 points. Spencer Spinks was another key player, putting up six points and ten rebounds.

Michael Wellman was his usual excellent self, en route to 25 points and five boards for Portage. That's the most points Wellman has posted since back in December of 2024. Myshawn Dawson also deserves some recognition as he scored his first points of the season.

Hebron's defeat dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Portage, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season.

Hebron and Portage are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Hebron will face off against Lake Station Edison at 5:30 p.m. on March 5th. As for Portage, they will head out on the road to face off against Hammond Morton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
