Basketball Recap: Kazion Morehead's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Freeport over Central

Freeport lost against Central back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Freeport Pretzels took a hard 72-53 fall against the Central Rockets. While losing is never fun, the Pretzels can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 397th, while the Rockets are ranked 109th).

Freeport's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kazion Morehead, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. With that strong performance, Morehead is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. Another player making a difference was Andrew Seward, who went 7 of 12 en route to 21 points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Freeport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in four consecutive games.

Jacob Johnson continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Central, going 9 of 18 on his way to 22 points and eight rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Shell, who posted 13 points along with six boards and three steals.

Freeport's record now sits at 7-11. As for Central, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-5.

Freeport will challenge Belvidere North at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Freeport is facing Belvidere North at the right time seeing as Belvidere North is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Central, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Cary-Grove at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Central is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.6 points per game this season.
