Desert Hot Springs falls, 56-50; Previous record of 7 overtimes had stood since 1991.
Big Bear (Big Bear City) outlasted host Desert Hot Springs (Calif.), 56-50, on Friday night in a California state-record eight-overtime football game. The exhausting contest, which lasted nearly four hours, was tied, 22-22, at the end of regulation play.
The previous state record of seven overtimes had stood since 1991.
It still, however, was somewhat short of the national record of 12 overtimes, which was established in 1991.
Losing coach L.D. Matthews told the Desert Sun, "It was probably one of the greatest games I've ever seen in my life."
The record for a college football game is seven overtimes, while the NFL record is just two, according to the Desert Sun.
