If Walnut wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Covina, they should've done a better job of containing Gatsbee Gumban. The Colts sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 24-21 win over the Mustangs on Thursday with plenty of help from Gumban, who rushed for 142 yards and a pair of scores. He also punched in two rushing touchdowns, which is notable because Covina is 3-1 when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise.

Covina didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Christopher Muro and Drew Goyne.

When it comes to explaining why Walnut lost, don't look at Christopher Mardueno. Despite the final result, he rushed for 92 yards and two TDs. Mardueno also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making four total tackles and defending one pass.

Covina's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 4-5. As for Walnut, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-5 record this season.
