Basketball Recap: Wednesday's Loss Ends Southwest Onslow's Winning Streak

After flying high against North Lenoir last Tuesday, Southwest Onslow came back down to earth. The match between the Southwest Onslow Stallions and the Kinston Vikings didn't end well, with the Southwest Onslow Stallions falling 51-37. While losing is never fun, the Stallions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 238th, while the Vikings are ranked 71st).

Southwest Onslow's loss on Wednesday came despite strong showings from Oriyanna Galloway and Khimara Dorsey. Galloway went 7 for 15 on her way to 21 points in addition to seven boards and six steals, while Dorsey dropped a double-double on 12 points and 20 rebounds. The contest was Galloway's tenth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brinkleyanne Lucas, who posted four points.

Kinston found their leader in freshman J'Riyana Edwards, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Edwards has scored all season. Nasheyla Mason was another key player, going 5 of 10 on her way to 14 points along with five assists and five boards.

With the loss, Southwest Onslow broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 6-4. As for Kinston, their win bumped their record up to 11-1.

Southwest Onslow wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 57-27 victory against South Lenoir on the 9th. As for Kinston, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 50-38 win against James Kenan on the 9th.
