Baseball Game Preview: Avon Eagles vs. Normandy Invaders

The Avon Eagles will square off against the Normandy Invaders at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in Avon's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while Normandy has been banged up by four consecutive losses on the road.

On Thursday, Avon had just enough and edged out Brunswick 5-4.

Casey Birth tossed a big game, pitching 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Avon is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-8 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Bryce Chura, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Mateus Porter, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.

Lakewood hit Normandy with a four-run fourth inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Invaders lost 10-4 to the Rangers.

Normandy saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Hinkle, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Avon's win bumped their record up to 4-9. As for Normandy, they now have a losing record of 3-4.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Avon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Normandy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
