Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Mater Academy Charter walked away with it. They came out on top against the Varela Vipers by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday. The win was familiar territory for the Lions, who have now won eight contests in a row.

Alfrin Rosario tossed a big game, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Jonathan Esponda was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Yodelkis Quevedo, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Mater Academy Charter pushed their record up to 22-9-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Varela, their defeat dropped their record down to 20-9-2.

Mater Academy Charter will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Vipers: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
