Basketball Recap: La Veta Comes Up Short

La Veta was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They took a blow against the Sierra Grande Panthers, falling 65-31. While losing is never fun, the Redhawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 319th, while the Panthers are ranked 116th).

La Veta lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Tristan Musgrave, who posted six points.

Sierra Grande was led to victory by Aron Ojeda and Jadyn Martinez. Ojeda went 11-for-20 to rack up 25 points and seven steals, while Martinez went 6-for-11 on his way to 20 points along with seven steals and five rebounds. Martinez is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Rolando Najera, who scored six points in addition to nine assists and five boards.

La Veta's loss dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Sierra Grande, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-2.

Coming up, La Veta will host Walsh at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Sierra Grande, they will venture away from home to challenge Hoehne at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Sierra Grande's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last nine games.
