Softball Recap: Otay Ranch Extends Home Winning Streak to Seven

Otay Ranch proved they can win big last Monday (they won by six) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out the Patrick Henry Patriots 3-2. That's more bragging rights for the Mustangs, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Scarlett Martinez looked comfortable as she tossed 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Otay Ranch saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Zoey Gonzales, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That double marked the first that Gonzales hit this season. Venice Inguito was another, going 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.

Otay Ranch's win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-2-1. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 8.71 hits in those games compared to only 4.8 in the others. As for Patrick Henry, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5.

Looking ahead, Otay Ranch will take on Oceanside at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Patrick Henry, they will welcome Calexico at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Calexico's pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Patrick Henry's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
