Northwestern High School quarterback Teddy Bridgewater tosses Dade County record seven touchdown passes; California back Cooper carries 60 times.

Though he’s only a junior, Teddy Bridgewater has placed his name above many great quarterbacks of the past by throwing seven touchdown passes as Northwestern (Miami, Fla.) defeated Hialeah-Miami Lakes, 54-23. The Dade County record had been six by three players.
The 6-foot-3, 170-pounder completed 19-of-24 passes for 327 yards and continues to carve out his own legend in one of the country’s greatest high school football hotbeds.
* North Carolina’s No. 1 senior prospect, defensive end Gabe King (6-5, 250), has moved to Eugene, Ore., and will attend South Eugene High School. He is ranked as the No. 41 overall player in the country by CBS College Sports-MaxPreps recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.
* Talk about a workhorse! Senior Deontae Cooper (6-1, 205) set a California state record when he carried 60 times as Perris Citrus Hill defeated Temecula Great Oak, 30-20. He also gained 412 yards and could repeat as the state’s leading rusher. Last year the University of Washington recruit ran for 2,948 yards and 43 touchdowns.
* Josh Dorman continues to fill the airways in Texas. The 6-1, 170-pound senior quarterback missed his own state record by one when he passed for seven touchdowns as North Richland Hills Birdville blitzed Azle, 63-28. He accounted for 553 yards.
* In California, junior Kevin Ervin is making a huge impact. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder ran for a school-record 409 yards (and six touchdowns) on just 20 carries as Sun Valley Poly rolled past Granada Hills, 58-27.
* Senior Carey Spear set a Mayfield (Ohio) record when he kicked field goals of 54, 47 and 47 yards during a 23-0 victory over Brush.
* Plymouth Regional extended its New Hampshire state-record winning streak to 48 games with a 51-6 rout of Milford. Coach Chuck Lenahan now has 313 victories in his 39th campaign. The Bobcats also won 46 straight earlier in his career.
* Wayne Hills nipped Wayne Valley, 7-0, for its 55th consecutive victory. The streak is second only in New Jersey history to Paulsboro’s string of 63 in a row.
* Winning their 300th football games last week were coaches Tom Young of McPherson (Kan.) and Mike Glaser of St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.).
National record at 300
The Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.) boys cross country juggernaut defeated Colts Neck, 20-43, and Manalapan, 15-50, to extend its national-record, dual-meet winning streak to an even 300. The Colts broke the previous record of 266 in 2004 and have a brilliant 331-7 record under Coach Tom Heath since 1971.
The 61-year-old Heath, who was a sprinter in track when he attended CBA, also has won the overall state championship – the Meet of Champions – 15 times.
To put the record in even greater perspective, it is the third-longest in the history of any high school sport. Still ahead are the tennis record of 316 by Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and the wrestling record of 459 by Brandon (Fla.). Both streaks have ended, so the sky is the limit for CBA.
“When we first got it (the record), it was pretty amazing,” Heath told MaxPreps. “Since then, it’s been one meet at a time. Ever since we’ve been pretty focused. The 300 kind of hit me. There were 500 or 600 people there (including a lot of former runners).
“There’s no pressure, because one of these days it’s going to end. As long as the kids do the best they can there is no pressure. The wrestling record in Florida – I’ll be dead before that happens.”
Verbicas wins duathlon
The nation’s No. 1 cross country runner, Lukas Verbicas, proved he’s ready for any type of race by winning the Junior Division of the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Charlotte, N.C.
The 5-foot-11, 140-pound sophomore from Carl Sandburg (Orland Park, Ill.) triumphed in 55:29. The race includes a 10K run, 4K bike ride and finishes with a 5K run. Second-place Mario Mola was timed in 55:39.
Shelton wins No. 500
Lil Shelton became the No. 4 all-time winner in field hockey when her Severna Park (Md.) girls defeated Annapolis, 9-0. It marked Shelton’s 500th victory in 34 years. The national record is 701 by Nancy Williams of West Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.).
“It doesn’t feel any different than winning 400 – other than everybody screaming and hollering," Shelton said.
The veteran coach listed her age as “in the upper 70s. I want to coach until the hearse drives on to the field.”
* Ginger Kincaid of Glenelg (Md.) recently recorded her 300th victory as a field hockey coach.
Daues gets 300th victory
Bill Daues notched his 300th boys soccer coaching victory when Whitfield (St. Louis, Mo.) blanked Affton, 6-0. Daues, now in his 21st campaign, also has guided the Warriors to five state titles.
