Baseball Game Preview: Copper Canyon Aztecs vs. Desert Edge Scorpions

The Copper Canyon Aztecs will head out on the road to square off against the Desert Edge Scorpions at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Copper Canyon's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three games.

Copper Canyon came out on top against Glendale on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive 11-run fifth inning. The Aztecs put the hurt on the Cardinals with a sharp 14-4 win. The victory continues a trend for the Aztecs in their matchups with the Cardinals: they've now won seven in a row.

Jesus Vega was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, four RBI, and one run. Those three doubles gave him a new career-high. Emmanuel Manjarrez Beltran was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Copper Canyon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Desert Edge didn't have quite enough to beat Mountain Pointe on Tuesday and fell 7-6. The Scorpions have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Desert Edge saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rene Ruiz, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and one double. Christian Waldera also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Desert Edge's loss dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Copper Canyon, their record is now 12-6-1.

Desert Edge's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Copper Canyon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .519. It's a different story for Desert Edge, though, as they've only averaged .350. Will they be able to contain Copper Canyon's hitters?

Copper Canyon might still be hurting after the 12-5 defeat they got from Desert Edge in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. Can the Aztecs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
