Baseball Recap: Portland Victorious

Portland came out on top against Friendship Christian on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run seventh inning. The Panthers had just enough and edged out the Commanders 6-5. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 4-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Kevin Cook looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Portland is 3-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 8-17 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Portland let Cayden Lane and William McGlothlin run wild. Lane went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs, while McGlothlin went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Portland is 2-1 when Lane posts two or more runs, but 9-17 otherwise. Jay Guthrie was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The victory made it two in a row for Portland and bumps their season record up to 11-18. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Friendship Christian, they now have a losing record of 11-12-1.

Looking ahead, Portland will challenge Watertown at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Purple Tigers' pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Friendship Christian, they will host Springfield at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
