Baseball Game Preview: Serra Catholic Eagles vs. Elk County Catholic Crusaders

The Serra Catholic Eagles are taking a road trip to take on the Elk County Catholic Crusaders at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Serra Catholic 3.9, Elk County Catholic 2.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Serra Catholic took a loss when they played away from home last Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Western Beaver a 5-0 shutout. The Eagles haven't had any issues with the Golden Beavers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Meanwhile, it's playoff time, and Elk County Catholic had no trouble coming through when it counted. They came out on top against Clarion Area by a score of 5-2 on Monday.

Matthew Gilmore made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Chase Simbeck, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Serra Catholic's record now sits at 15-9. As for Elk County Catholic, their record is now 18-3.

Serra Catholic got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in March of 2019 against Elk County Catholic by a conclusive 6-0 score. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Crusaders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
