Basketball Recap: Raton Piles Up the Points Against Estancia

Raton entered their tilt with Estancia on Thursday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Estancia Bears, posting a 74-42 victory. This was payback for the Tigers, who suffered an 80-47 loss the last time these two teams met.

Raton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cannon Walton led the charge by going 7 for 12 on his way to 19 points and seven steals. Walton continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Petrini, who posted 15 points in addition to eight rebounds and seven assists.

Raton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in 14 consecutive contests.

Estancia's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Olavio Hernandez, who had eight points. Another player making a difference was Jose Chaparro, who scored ten points.

Raton now has a winning record of 8-7. As for Estancia, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Raton Tigers duke it out with the Pecos Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Estancia, they will take on Clayton at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
