Basketball Recap: Greenfield-Central Takes a Loss

Greenfield-Central has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 57-55 heartbreaker at the hands of the Yorktown Tigers. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Defeat or not, Greenfield-Central got some senior leadership from Brooklyn Mcconnell and Madison Sonsini. Mcconnell went 6 for 11 en route to 18 points and five steals, while Sonsini went 7 of 14 on her way to 21 points and five boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mcconnell has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Chaney Brown, who posted nine points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Greenfield-Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Yorktown only posted three assists.

Yorktown's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Olivia Conklin, who went 8 for 17 on her way to 23 points and three steals. Conklin has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Mabrey Wood also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Greenfield-Central's loss dropped their record down to 15-7. As for Yorktown, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Greenfield-Central Cougars duke it out with the Southport Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Yorktown, they will head out on the road to face off against New Palestine at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Yorktown is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.2 points per game this season.
