Softball Recap: Mathis Extends Winning Streak to Nine

Mathis waltzed into their match on Tuesday with eight straight wins... but they left with nine. They walked away with an 8-5 win over the Taft Greyhounds. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 4-2 back in March.

Alyssa Herrera spent all 9.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up 15 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Marivel Martinez was incredible, going 4-for-6 with three doubles, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Leilani Cantu, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.

Martinez wasn't the only one making solid contact: Mathis kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in five consecutive games.

Mathis' victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-6-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Taft, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 16-10.

As of now, neither Mathis nor the Greyhounds have any future games scheduled.
