Softball Game Preview: LaPoynor Flyers vs. Cayuga Wildcats

LaPoynor hasn't had much luck against Cayuga recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The LaPoynor Flyers will square off against the Cayuga Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (LaPoynor has eight straight wins, Cayuga has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

LaPoynor will bounce into Friday's game after beating Cayuga, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. LaPoynor walked away with a 5-1 victory over Cayuga on Tuesday.

Taylor Lovett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up 17 Ks. Those 17 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

At the plate, Karly Dunn was excellent, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in RBI. Hadley Rhodes was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while going 1-for-3.

LaPoynor hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most three strikeouts in five consecutive contests.

LaPoynor's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Cayuga, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. LaPoynor hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .322. However, it's not like Cayuga struggles in that department as they've averaged .333. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
