Football Recap: Westover Patriots vs. Bainbridge Bearcats

After losing to Bainbridge the last time they met, Westover decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Westover Patriots sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 40-37 win over the Bainbridge Bearcats on Friday. Given the Patriots' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 95th, while the Bearcats are ranked 235th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Westover found their leader in underclassman Dominique Ball, who rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Those 224 rushing yards set a new season-high mark for Ball. Keyon Thomas was another key player, throwing for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Westover was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 277 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.

Bainbridge's loss came despite strong showings from Brooks Hines and Ja'Veen Breedlove. Hines threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while Breedlove rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns. 101 of those passing yards were hauled in by Vontrey Willingham, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Westover's victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Bainbridge, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-7.

Westover will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Monroe at 7:30 p.m. on October 18th. After each having a week off, Bainbridge and Peach County will shake off the cobwebs and take on one another at 7:30 p.m. on October 18th. Peach County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past seven contests -- so hopefully Bainbridge likes a good challenge.
