Sparta has gone 6-1 against Vernon recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Spartans will square off against the Vikings at 3:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Sparta put up the most runs they have all season on Monday. They walked away with a 15-11 victory over Delaware Valley. That's two games straight that the Spartans have won by exactly four runs.
Meanwhile, Vernon entered their tilt with Lenape Valley on Wednesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Patriots with a sharp 11-1 win. Considering the Vikings have won nine matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Miranda Ebbighausen was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elizabeth ?E? Peek, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn VanBlarcom, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Vernon lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Vernon's victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-5. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for Sparta, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 4-9.
Sparta was able to grind out a solid win over Vernon in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, winning 5-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
