Preview: Albuquerque Academy Chargers vs. Lovington Wildcats
After three games on the road, Albuquerque Academy is heading back home. They will take on The Lovington Wildcats at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
Albuquerque Academy fell victim to Portales' stalwart defense on Friday and couldn't make it onto the board. They had to suffer through a rough 54-0 loss at the hands of the Rams.
Lovington fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They were the clear victor by a 47-26 margin over Bernalillo. The result was nothing new for Lovington, who have now won three games by 21 points or more so far this season.
Lovington haved a senior duo take command as Wyatt Gomez threw for 463 yards and six touchdowns and Demarcus Thompson picked up 238 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Thompson was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 67 yards. Cesar Gonzalez was another key contributor, picking up 95 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Lovington's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Thompson and his two sacks.
With Albuquerque Academy's loss and Lovington's victory, both teams now sport identical 5-3 records.
Albuquerque Academy took a serious blow against Lovington in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 43-14. Thankfully for Albuquerque Academy, Ashton Aranda (who rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, and also threw for 124 yards and a touchdown) won't be suiting up this time.
