Softball Game Preview: Seneca Red Hawks vs. Atherton Ravens

Seneca is 1-6 against Atherton since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Red Hawks will welcome the Ravens at 5:00 p.m. Seneca has given up an average of 14.6 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Seneca is headed into Wednesday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Monday. They came up short against Valley, falling 18-9.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Atherton, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Holy Cross a 6-0 shutout on Monday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Ravens as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Not much got past Charlee Heselschwerdt, who gave up just a hit and racked up 14 Ks to keep Holy Cross off the board. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Heselschwerdt.

On the hitting side, Izzy Cummins and Crissy Reese did most of the damage at the plate: Cummins got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base, while Reese went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Ava Keen, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Atherton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Holy Cross only posted a batting average of .045.

Atherton pushed their record up to 4-8 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Seneca, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.
