Softball Game Preview: Winthrop Vikings vs. Gloucester Fishermen

Winthrop hasn't had much luck against Gloucester recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Vikings will take on the Fishermen at 5:00 p.m.

On Thursday, Winthrop came up short against Salem and fell 7-2. The Vikings have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Lucy Boncore spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 13 Ks.

On the hitting side, Winthrop saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sofia Gonzalez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Tina Fabiano also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Gloucester put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on Swampscott with a sharp 11-5 win. Considering the Fishermen have won five games by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Gloucester's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-0. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Winthrop, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-12.

Winthrop might still be hurting after the 12-0 loss they got from Gloucester when the teams last played back in April. Can the Vikings avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
