Baseball Recap: Oxford Takes a Loss

Oxford has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 2.27 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Thursday. They fell just short of the Flinthills Mustangs by a score of 12-11. The Wildcats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Mustangs earlier this season, when they won 6-2.

Jonathan Elliott was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with one triple and one run.

In other batting news, Oxford got a massive performance out of Connor Commerford, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, two doubles, and two RBI. Commerford has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Pearson Rush was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Oxford's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 8-3. As for Flinthills, their victory bumped their record up to 4-9.

When Oxford and Flinthills next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. The Wildcats will take on Sedan and their three-game winning streak at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Flinthills will try to stop South Haven's four-game winning streak when they meet at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
