Preview: Newtown Nighthawks vs. Weston Trojans

After three games on the road, Newtown is heading back home. They will take on The Weston Trojans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Newtown will be strutting in after a win while Weston will be coming in after a loss.

Last Friday, Newtown humbled New Fairfield with a 41-6 victory. 41 seems to be a good number for Newtown as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.

Newtown can attribute much of their success to Jayden Taylor, who picked up 73 receiving yards and three touchdowns, and Jayden Cordova, who threw for 171 yards and four touchdowns. Aydyn Gonzalez Gil got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Newtown's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Jack Chappa and his two sacks.

Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 38-7, which was the final score in Weston's tilt against Pomperaug on Friday.

Newtown's victory was their eighth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 5-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-6 Stratford and 0-10 Bethel (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 33.3% over those games). As for Weston, they now have a losing record at 2-3.

Newtown was able to grind out a solid victory over Weston when the teams last played back in November of 2021, winning 35-28. Does Newtown have another victory up their sleeve, or will Weston turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
