Softball Game Preview: Wheeling Wildcats vs. Schaumburg Saxons

Wheeling is 1-7 against Schaumburg since May of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Wildcats will be playing at home against the Saxons at 4:45 p.m. Wheeling has given up an average of 11.7 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Wheeling is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Saturday. They fell 15-12 to Harvest Christian Academy.

Mia Smith made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That stolen base was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Caitlyn Fitzgerald, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Schaumburg and Palatine meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Wednesday. The Saxons lost 10-3 to the Pirates. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Saxons have suffered against the Pirates since May 13, 2019.

Taylor Dolecki was cooking despite her team's loss, firing off two home runs while going 2-for-3. Jordan Murtaugh was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one home run.

Schaumburg has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season. As for Wheeling, their loss dropped their record down to 5-11.

Wheeling beat Schaumburg 8-4 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Do the Wildcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Saxons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
