Softball Game Preview: Voorheesville Blackbirds vs. Ichabod Crane Riders

Voorheesville is 0-8 against Ichabod Crane since May of 2015 but things could change on Wednesday. The Blackbirds will host the Riders at 3:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Monday just wasn't the day for Voorheesville's offense. They fell 4-0 to Cohoes on Monday. The Blackbirds have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, while it was Ichabod Crane who put the first runs on the board on Tuesday, it was Columbia who put up more. The Riders fell just short of the Blue Devils by a score of 4-3.

Torri Cutler was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Cutler wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Emma Holmberg, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Voorheesville's loss dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Ichabod Crane, their defeat ended a 13-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 4-2.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Voorheesville has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Ichabod Crane struggles in that department as they've been averaging 11.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Voorheesville suffered a grim 32-3 defeat to Ichabod Crane in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Blackbirds avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
