The Ayden - Grifton Chargers will head out on the road to face off against the Fike Demons at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Ayden - Grifton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Ayden - Grifton easily dispatched North Pitt on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Chargers fell just short of SouthWest Edgecombe by a score of 7-5 on Tuesday. The Chargers' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Kenlie Guthrie spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, KG Olejar was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Raelyn Jones, who went 3-for-4 with one triple and one run.
Fike never got on the board in their matchup on Thursday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Smithfield-Selma on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Spartans. The Demons haven't had any issues with the Spartans recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.
Gracie Vincent made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Vincent was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, Fike let Selah Escamilla and Cheyanne Mercer run wild. Escamilla scored two runs while going 1-for-2, while Mercer scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. What's more, Escamilla posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Aleah Thompson was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
Fike hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in five consecutive matchups.
Fike's record is now 4-11. As for Ayden - Grifton, they now have a losing record of 7-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Ayden - Grifton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Fike struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Ayden - Grifton came out on top in a nail-biter against Fike when the teams last played back in February of 2019, sneaking past 10-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Chargers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
