Basketball Recap: Cannon Skates Past Covenant Day with Ease

Cannon waltzed into their matchup on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Covenant Day Lions 75-28. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked fifth, while the Lions are ranked 132nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cannon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Madison Drayton, who went 8 for 13 en route to 21 points and seven rebounds. With that strong performance, Drayton is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakaila Gaskin, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.

Cannon was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Covenant Day only racked up eight assists.

Despite the loss, Covenant Day saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Lila Jones posted six points and 12 rebounds. Jones is becoming a predictor of Covenant Day's success: when she posts at least ten boards the team is 11-4 (and 1-3 when she doesn't). Another player making a difference was Charlotte Hall, who had nine points.

Cannon's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5. As for Covenant Day, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-7.

Cannon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 65-45 defeat against Montverde Academy on the 20th. Covenant Day has also already played their next game, a 59-10 win against South Charlotte on the 18th.
