Baseball Recap: Spring Mills Has No Trouble Against Frankfort

While Spring Mills didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-19), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past the Frankfort Falcons 9-2 on Saturday. Considering the Cardinals have won five games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Rylan Swartz made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and not a single walk). Swartz was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on JP Sweeney, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and two doubles. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 3.3 RBI per game. Another player making a difference was Bryce Anders, who scored four runs while going 4-for-4.

Spring Mills was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.

Spring Mills pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Frankfort, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 3-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Spring Mills Cardinals face off against Jefferson Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Frankfort, they will be playing at home against Hampshire at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
