Basketball Recap: Carroll Christian Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Carroll Christian won the last time they faced Mount Airy Christian Academy, and Joanna Mathews did her part to make sure it happened again. Carroll Christian blew past Mount Airy Christian Academy 61-27 on Tuesday thanks in part to Mathews, who dropped a double-double on 37 points and 12 steals. That makes it nine consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Carroll Christian's points.

Joelle Mathews was another key player, putting up 12 points along with six rebounds and four steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played.

Despite the loss, Mount Airy Christian Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Avery Witter posted 16 points in addition to eight steals and seven boards. Those eight steals set a new season-high mark for Witter. The team also got some help courtesy of Reagan Trumbower, who had four points.

Carroll Christian moved to 6-3 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Mount Airy Christian Academy, they now have a losing record at 4-5.

Carroll Christian will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Washington Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. As for Mount Airy Christian Academy, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 40-37 defeat against Cumberland Valley Christian on the 19th.
