Football Recap: Elizabethton Wins Going Away Against Volunteer

Elizabethton won the last time they faced Volunteer and things went their way on Friday too. The Fighting Cyclones came out on top against the Falcons by a score of 31-21. The matchup marked the Fighting Cyclones' most dominant victory of the season so far.

Rhett Slagle produced another solid effort throwing for 243 yards and one touchdown while completing 84% of his passes, and also punching in a pair of scores on the ground. Elizabethton's leading receiver Zack Wallin was Slagle's top target yet again, picking up 157 receiving yards.

Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Cj Mathes, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

When it comes to explaining why Volunteer lost, don't look at Owen Fleenor. Despite the final result, he rushed for 122 yards and a pair of TDs on only six carries.

The win (which was Elizabethton's third in a row) raised their record to 3-1. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 26.0 points over those games. As for Volunteer, their defeat was their first of the season and also makes their record 3-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elizabethton will challenge Cherokee at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Fighting Cyclones will need to watch out since the Chiefs have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season. As for Volunteer, they will face off against Seymour at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Falcons will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 27 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
