Softball Recap: St. Mary Central Catholic Takes a Loss

St. Mary Central Catholic had lost four straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 0-11 to make it five. They came up short against the Gibsonburg Golden Bears, falling 21-0. If the Panthers were looking for revenge after losing 18-6 to the Golden Bears when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Gibsonburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games.

For Gibsonburg's part, Ava Amor made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Amor has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four RBI and two runs.

In other batting news, Cheyenne Reese and Mia Brink did most of the damage at the plate: Reese went 3-for-5 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Brink went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four runs gave Reese a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Leah Hall, who earned two RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases.

Coincidentally, St. Mary Central Catholic and Gibsonburg will both be playing Hopewell-Loudon the next time they take the field. The Golden Bears will host the Chieftains at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Panthers will host them at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
