Mater Dei romps but Bosco barely gets by in Trinity League openers.

Bishop Amat enters Top 25 at No. 18 after big win.

Just how good is the Trinity League?

Previous 18th-ranked Servite jumped seven spots to No. 11 in the MaxPreps Top 25 California high school football rankings after a defeat.

The Friars (4-2) went toe-to-toe but a missed extra point was costly in a 27-26 defeat to St. John Bosco, ranked second in California and nationally. It gets no easier for Servite which immediately travels to Santa Ana Stadium to face top-ranked Mater Dei, which had little trouble with previously ranked Orange Lutheran 51-14.

Mater Dei quarterback Bryce Young continued his brilliant season with 278 yards passing and four touchdowns — to four different receivers. Against arguably the toughest schedule in the country, Young has completed 73 percent of his 191 passes for 1,978 yards and 23 touchdowns against three interceptions. He's also rushed for five touchdowns.

It doesn't get any easier for Bosco either as the Braves travel to ninth-ranked JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano).

In other big games from last week that impacted the Top 25, unranked Bishop Amat (5-1) jumped into the rankings with a 25-24 win over previous No. 12 and unbeaten Alemany. Chaparral (6-0) also moved into the rankings by beating a ranked squad, No. 25 Murrieta Valley, 30-27.

The rest of the ranked teams had little resistance. In fact, seven teams recorded shutouts by a combined score of 340-0.

Besides Murrieta Valley, previous 11th-ranked Serra (Gardena) also left the rankings following a 24-7 defeat to unranked Loyola-Los Angeles (3-3).
Cal-bound running back Chris Street will lead No. 9 JSerra Catholic against No. 2 St. John Bosco on Friday.
