Baseball Recap: Mathews Comes Up Short

Mathews extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 1-14. They lost 16-6 to the Middlesex Chargers. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Chargers this season, with their most recent defeat being a 16-1 loss last Friday.

As for Middlesex, the victory got them back to even at 8-8. The result was nothing new for the Chargers, who have now won six games by eight runs or more so far this season.

For Middlesex's part, Bryson Bulgin made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. Bulgin has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Henry Fleet was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Jacob Nowell, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Mathews will challenge Northampton at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Devils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Yellowjackets have averaged an impressive 6.7 runs per game this season. As for Middlesex, they will square off against West Point at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Pointers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.21 runs per game on average), something the Chargers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
